Inside Johnston Canyon
Johnston Canyon, located in Banff National Park, is one of the most popular and accessible natural attractions in the Canadian Rockies.
Johnston Canyon Trail Overview
Two Main Trail Options:
Lower Falls (1.2 km / 0.7 miles one way): This is the easier and shorter hike. It takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour (round trip) and leads to the Lower Falls, where you can get close to the cascading water via a small bridge and a natural cave opening.
Upper Falls (2.7 km / 1.6 miles one way): A more moderate hike with a slightly steeper incline. It takes 2–2.5 hours round trip. The Upper Falls feature two viewpoints—one at the bottom of the falls and another up close and personal via a catwalk.
Optional Extension: If you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue beyond the Upper Falls to the Ink Pots (5.8 km / 3.6 miles one way), which are vibrant blue-green mineral pools in a meadow.
Inside Johnston Canyon
Scenic Catwalks: A series of metal catwalks are attached to the canyon walls, allowing visitors to walk safely above the rushing waters of Johnston Creek. These narrow paths offer thrilling views of the gorge, waterfalls, and rock formations.
Johnston Canyon's Waterfalls: The Lower Falls can be observed from a viewpoint accessed via a small tunnel. The Upper Falls are taller and more dramatic, with water plummeting into a deep pool below.
Lush Forests: The trail meanders through dense evergreen forests, offering shade and a serene atmosphere. Keep an eye out for moss-covered rocks, ferns, and small wildlife.
Wildlife: You might spot birds, chipmunks, or even larger animals like deer or bears in the area. Early mornings and evenings are the best times for wildlife sightings.
Johnston Canyon's Seasonal Experiences
Summer (June–September): The canyon is alive with flowing water and vibrant greenery. Expect crowds, as it’s a popular summer destination. Wear good hiking shoes, as some parts can be slippery.
Winter (December–March) in Johnston Canyon: Johnston Canyon transforms into a winter wonderland with frozen waterfalls and ice-covered walls. You can book a guided ice walk tour with cleats and poles, which are highly recommended for safety.
Enjoying Inside Johnston Canyon
Start Early: Beat the crowds by arriving before 8:00 AM.
Respect Nature: Stay on marked paths and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Guided Johnston Canyon Tours: For a more in-depth experience, consider joining a guided tour, especially in winter.
