Development of Johnston Canyon's Trails Over Time

The development of Johnston Canyon's trails in Banff National Park is attributed to several key figures and groups over time. In the early 20th century, Hungarian internment camp prisoners from World War I constructed the initial paths and bridges, enhancing accessibility to the canyon's natural features. Later, in 1926, Walter and Marguerite Camp purchased a log teahouse near the canyon and expanded it into a bungalow motor camp. Walter Camp further developed the area by building trails and wooden bridges, facilitating easier access to the waterfalls for visitors. In the 1970s, Parks Canada took over the site and upgraded the wooden structures to steel catwalks and platforms, ensuring safer and more durable pathways for hikers. These collective efforts have transformed Johnston Canyon into a popular and accessible destination within the park. Johnston Canyon Home
