Johnston Canyon Hiking Trail's Three Main Destinations

The Johnston Canyon trail in Banff National Park offers hikers three main destinations, each with its own distance and level of challenge. The hike to the Lower Falls is a gentle 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles) one way, with a modest elevation gain of about 30 meters, making it ideal for families and casual walkers. Continuing on to the Upper Falls adds another 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles), for a total of 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) from the trailhead, with a more noticeable elevation gain of approximately 120 meters. This portion of the trail includes catwalks along canyon walls and offers dramatic views of the gorge and waterfalls. For those seeking a longer and more tranquil adventure, the path to the Ink Pots extends the journey another 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) past the Upper Falls, totaling 5.7 kilometers (3.5 miles) one way. This final stretch climbs through forest and meadows, gaining about 335 meters in elevation, and ends at a stunning alpine basin filled with clear, cold spring-fed pools known as the Ink Pots. Each stage of the hike offers its own rewards, allowing visitors to choose an experience that suits their time and energy. Johnston Canyon Home
