Johnston Canyon is Sculpted by the Flowing Waters of Johnston Creek

Johnston Canyon is sculpted by the flowing waters of Johnston Creek, a picturesque mountain stream that plays a vital role in shaping the canyon’s dramatic limestone walls. This glacial-fed creek begins in the high alpine regions near Badger Pass and Pulsatilla Pass, collecting runoff as it travels southeast between Helena Ridge and the Sawback Range. As the creek flows through the narrow canyon, it cascades over waterfalls—most notably the Lower and Upper Falls—creating stunning turquoise pools and deep potholes in the rock below. Along its route, Johnston Creek carves through millions of years of sedimentary rock, exposing layers that tell a geological story of the Canadian Rockies. After exiting the canyon, the creek continues its journey until it merges with the Bow River near Castle Mountain. This ever-changing watercourse not only supports diverse plant and animal life but also provides a mesmerizing natural experience for hikers exploring the canyon’s suspended catwalks and forested trails.
