Johnston Creek, the Lifeline of Johnston Canyon

Johnston Creek, the Lifeline of Johnston Canyon

Johnston Creek, the lifeline of Johnston Canyon, has carved its way through limestone rock over thousands of years, creating the deep, narrow gorge that visitors see today. The creek’s clear, fast-flowing waters originate from the alpine slopes of the Sawback Range before winding through the canyon, forming a series of waterfalls, pools, and rapids. One of its most famous features is Lower Falls, where the creek plunges 5 meters (16 feet) into a striking turquoise pool, framed by towering rock walls. The water's constant movement has smoothed the canyon walls over time, creating dramatic overhangs and unique rock formations. The catwalk-style trail along the creek offers incredible views of the rushing water, moss-covered cliffs, and occasional wildlife. A highlight of the Lower Falls experience is the small rock tunnel near the viewing platform, where visitors can step through to feel the mist and hear the falls up close. Whether in summer, when the creek flows rapidly with snowmelt, or in winter, when sections freeze into icy blue sculptures, Johnston Creek and Lower Falls offer a stunning and ever-changing natural spectacle.
