Getting to Johnston Canyon is straightforward, and there are a few different routes depending on your starting point.


Reaching the Johnston Canyon Trailhead


From Banff Townsite (25 km, ~30 minutes by car):

Via Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A):
Take the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) west from Banff.
Exit onto the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) at the Castle Junction exit or the Banff exit.
Follow the scenic Bow Valley Parkway west for about 25 km to the Johnston Canyon parking lot.
The Bow Valley Parkway is a scenic, wildlife-rich drive with reduced speed limits and beautiful views. It’s ideal if you want a leisurely and picturesque journey.

Via Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1):
Stay on the Trans-Canada Highway and exit at Castle Junction.
Turn onto the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) and drive east to Johnston Canyon.

Johnston Canyon From Lake Louise (40 km, ~40 minutes by car):
Take the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) east from Lake Louise.
Exit at Castle Junction and turn onto the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A).
Drive east for about 6 km to reach Johnston Canyon.

Johnston Canyon Parking Information
The main parking lot is located at the Johnston Canyon trailhead.
Arrive early (before 9:00 AM) to secure a spot, especially in summer, as this is a very popular destination.
If the lot is full, additional parking may be available nearby, but it might require a short walk to the trailhead.

Public Transportation to Johnston Canyon

Roam Transit: Route 9 services Johnston Canyon seasonally, connecting it to Banff and Lake Louise. Check schedules and availability if you’re visiting during peak tourist seasons.
