Johnston Canyon Waterfalls in Banff National Park

Johnston Canyon Waterfalls in Banff National Park

The waterfalls at Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park are truly mesmerizing as they cascade down the narrow, rugged canyon walls.

The Lower Falls

Distance from Trailhead: ~1.2 km (0.75 miles) one way.
Height: ~10 meters (33 feet).
Experience: As you approach the Lower Falls, the sound of water crashing intensifies, echoing through the canyon. A viewing platform gives you a fantastic vantage point to watch the water as it plunges into a pool below, surrounded by steep canyon walls. For a closer look, walk through the small tunnel carved into the rock. You'll emerge to a viewing spot where the mist from the falls cools the air around you.

The Upper Falls

Distance from Trailhead: ~2.5 km (1.55 miles) one way.
Height: ~30 meters (98 feet).
Experience: The Upper Falls are even more dramatic. As the water cascades down the towering cliffs, it creates a thunderous roar.
Two viewpoints are available: Lower Viewing Platform: Near the base of the falls, where you can feel the spray.
Upper Viewing Platform: A short, steep climb brings you to a vantage point overlooking the falls from above.

How the Water Falls Down

Erosion: Over thousands of years, Johnston Creek has carved the canyon, creating a series of narrow channels and waterfalls. The force of the water continues to shape the rock today.
Winter Magic: In winter, the falls partially freeze, forming stunning ice sculptures and attracting ice climbers.

Best Times to Visit

Summer: Vibrant greenery and full water flow.
Winter: A magical icy wonderland with frozen falls.
Early Morning or Late Evening: Fewer crowds and softer light for photography. Johnston Canyon Home
