What Feeds Johnston Canyon

What Feeds Johnston Canyon

Johnston Canyon is primarily fed by Johnston Creek, a tributary of the Bow River in Banff National Park. Johnston Creek is responsible for carving the canyon's stunning limestone walls and creating the spectacular waterfalls that attract visitors year-round.

Johnston Creek

Johnston Creek originates in the Sawback Range of the Canadian Rockies. It is primarily fed by snowmelt and rainwater from the surrounding mountains, ensuring a steady flow of water throughout the year.
Path: Johnston creek flows through Johnston Canyon, where it has eroded the soft limestone rock over thousands of years, creating the deep canyon with its steep walls and waterfalls. After exiting the canyon, Johnston Creek continues to flow southeast until it merges with the Bow River near Castle Junction.

Johnston CreekSeasonal Variations

Summer: The creek's flow is strongest in the spring and summer due to snowmelt from the surrounding peaks and increased rainfall.
Winter: In colder months, the creek partially freezes, forming stunning ice formations on the canyon walls and waterfalls.
Waterfalls: Johnston Creek creates the Lower Falls and Upper Falls, which are the main attractions along the hiking trail. Beyond the Upper Falls, the creek continues to flow toward the Inkpots, a series of mineral-rich, spring-fed pools.

Contribution to Johnston Canyon's Ecosystem

The creek supports a diverse range of plant and animal life in the canyon. It also contributes to the Bow River, an essential waterway in the region.

How Johnston Creek Shaped the Canyon

Over thousands of years, the flowing water of Johnston Creek eroded the softer limestone rock, creating the deep, narrow gorge we see today. Seasonal variations in water flow and freeze-thaw cycles have further sculpted the canyon's unique features. Johnston Canyon Home
