Rest Benches Along the Johnston Canyon Trail

The Johnston Canyon trail has several rest benches strategically placed along the route, providing opportunities to take a break and enjoy the scenery.

1. Lower Section (Trailhead to Lower Falls – 1.2 km)

Benches are available near the trailhead and at key viewpoints along the catwalks.
A few rest spots are found at wider sections of the trail where the elevated walkway meets the forest floor.
Just before Lower Falls, there are benches at a scenic viewing area, allowing hikers to relax and watch the water flow through the canyon.

2. Midway Section (Lower Falls to Upper Falls – 1.3 km)

The trail becomes steeper and transitions from elevated catwalks to a more natural forested path. There are several benches along this stretch, mostly at small clearings with good vantage points. One notable bench area is located about halfway to Upper Falls, where hikers can rest before the final incline.

3. Upper Section (Upper Falls – 2.5 km)

Benches are placed near the two Upper Falls viewing platforms.
The lower viewing area at Upper Falls has a few rocky ledges where hikers often sit.
The upper viewing deck also has seating for those wanting to take in the view before heading back.

4. Ink Pots Extension (Upper Falls to Ink Pots – 3.2 km)

This section has fewer rest benches, as the trail becomes more natural and open.
At the Ink Pots (5.7 km from the trailhead), there are multiple benches and logs where hikers can relax and enjoy the colorful mineral pools and surrounding meadows.

Tips for Using Rest Areas

Early in the day, benches are more available. As crowds increase, they fill up quickly. Some benches are in shaded spots, while others offer full sun exposure. Bring a light cushion or blanket if you plan to sit for an extended period. While Johnston Canyon has a good number of resting areas, the busiest spots near the Lower and Upper Falls may require a short wait for a seat. If you're hiking further to the Ink Pots, be prepared for fewer designated rest areas along the way. Johnston Canyon Home
