Cave at Johnston Canyon

Cave at Johnston Canyon

To get up close to a cave at Johnston Canyon in Banff, the most popular and accessible option is near the Lower Falls. This spot offers an intimate look at the unique geological features of the canyon, allowing you to experience the power of water and the intricate rock formations up close.

Up Close to the Cave at Lower Falls

Location: About 1.1 km (0.7 miles) from the Johnston Canyon trailhead.
Trail Description: The trail to the Lower Falls is a well-maintained path with catwalks that take you right through the canyon, alongside the rushing creek.
Cave Experience: As you approach the Lower Falls, there is a small side path that branches off to the left, leading to a short tunnel carved through the rock. This tunnel is essentially a small cave that opens up directly in front of the waterfall, providing a spectacular view of the falls from just a few meters away. The roar of the water and the mist in the air make this an immersive experience—you can feel the cool spray from the falls as you peer through the cave opening.

Cave at Johnston Canyon Lower Falls

Tunnel Access: The tunnel is low and narrow, so you'll need to duck slightly as you enter. It's just a few meters long, but it adds a sense of adventure to the hike. You emerge at the other end with a direct view of the waterfall—a great photo opportunity!
Waterfall Mist: Be prepared to get a little wet from the waterfall spray, especially in spring and summer when the water flow is at its peak.
Unique Viewpoint: This cave provides one of the closest viewpoints to a waterfall in the canyon, offering a perspective you won’t get from any other part of the trail.

Hiking to the Cave at Johnston Canyon Tips

Footwear: Wear sturdy shoes, as the area can be slippery due to water spray.
Crowds: This is a popular spot, so you may have to wait your turn to enter the cave, especially during peak times.
Photography: Be cautious with cameras and phones, as the mist from the falls can make things wet quickly. Johnston Canyon Home
