Beautiful Falls at Johnston Canyon

Beautiful Falls at Johnston Canyon

The beautiful falls at Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park are some of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the Canadian Rockies.

Johnston Canyon's Lower Falls

Location: ~1.2 km (0.75 miles) from the parking lot.
Highlights: Nestled within a narrow canyon, the Lower Falls cascade dramatically over the rocks into a crystal-clear pool below. A unique viewing tunnel carved into the rock allows visitors to get up close to the falls. The experience is immersive—you can feel the mist and hear the roar of the water as it crashes down. The surrounding canyon walls create a picturesque frame, with moss, greenery, and jagged rock formations enhancing the view.

Johnston Canyon's Upper Falls

Location: ~2.5 km (1.55 miles) from the parking lot.
Highlights: The Upper Falls are taller and even more dramatic, with water plunging ~30 meters (98 feet) from a high cliff into the canyon below.
There are two viewing platforms: The lower platform, near the base of the falls, where you can experience their sheer power. The upper platform, accessed by a short uphill climb, offers a panoramic view of the waterfall and the surrounding forest. The contrast between the rushing water and the towering canyon walls creates an unforgettable sight.

What Makes These Beautiful Falls Unique?

The narrow, winding canyon creates a magical setting where the water twists, turns, and plunges into deep pools below.
In summer, the waterfalls are surrounded by lush greenery, while in winter, they partially freeze, transforming into surreal ice formations.
The journey along the catwalks offers incredible views of the canyon and the creek, making the entire hike feel like a scenic adventure.

Tips for Visiting Johnston Canyon's Beautiful Falls

Early Morning or Late Afternoon: To avoid crowds and enjoy the falls in a quieter atmosphere.
Winter Magic: If you visit in winter, consider wearing ice cleats for traction, as the trail can be icy but absolutely stunning with frozen falls.
Photography: Bring a wide-angle lens for the canyon views and a waterproof cover for your camera when near the falls. Johnston Canyon Home
