Johnston Canyon's Elevated Hiking Catwalks

The walkways at Johnston Canyon are a series of sturdy, elevated metal catwalks bolted into the canyon walls, allowing hikers to traverse above the rushing river while offering breathtaking views of the deep, narrow limestone gorge below. These walkways wind along the cliffs, hugging the rock face and occasionally crossing the river via sturdy bridges, providing an immersive experience of the canyon’s dramatic landscape. The sound of the turquoise-blue water thundering through the canyon echoes off the walls, creating a dynamic atmosphere. In some sections, the trail narrows, and hikers find themselves walking just inches from the rock, while in others, open viewpoints offer panoramic vistas of waterfalls, moss-covered rock formations, and occasional glimpses of wildlife. The sturdy railings and non-slip surface make the path accessible for most visitors, though the walk can feel thrilling due to its height above the water. During winter, the catwalks are often coated in ice, transforming the canyon into a frozen wonderland where waterfalls become towering ice formations and the river flows beneath a crystalline surface.
