Location of Johnston Canyon's Hiking Trailhead

The trailhead is at Johnston Canyon Day-Use Area along the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A).
Distance from Banff: Approximately 25 km (15.5 miles), about a 30-minute drive west of Banff.
Distance from Lake Louise: Approximately 33 km (20.5 miles), about 35-40 minutes east of Lake Louise.

Johnston Canyon hiking Parking & Access

The parking lot is large but fills up quickly, especially between 9 AM - 3 PM during peak summer months.
Overflow parking is available along the road if the main lot is full.
Alternative Transport: Roam Transit (Route 9) provides bus service from Banff to Johnston Canyon during the summer season.

Facilities at the Johnston Canyon Trailhead

Restrooms with flush toilets are available near the parking lot.
Picnic tables provide a place to rest or have a meal before or after the hike.
Johnston Canyon Lodge & Bungalows is located nearby, offering a café and accommodations (seasonal).

Starting the Johnston Canyon Hike

The trail begins as a flat and wide paved path through a forested area.
After about 300 meters, the trail transitions to elevated metal catwalks, which are built along the canyon walls and offer unique views of the rushing water below.
The trail is well-marked, leading to the key destinations:
Lower Falls (1.2 km one way)
Upper Falls (2.5 km one way)
Ink Pots (5.7 km one way)

For the best experience, it is recommended to arrive early in the morning (before 8 AM) or later in the afternoon (after 4 PM) to avoid peak crowds and secure parking. Johnston Canyon Home
