Hiking Walkways at Johnston Canyon

Johnston Canyon's trail is well-maintained and accessible, featuring a combination of elevated metal catwalks, dirt paths, and wooden bridges. These walkways provide safe and scenic access to the canyon's waterfalls and unique rock formations.

1. Elevated Metal Catwalks (First 1.5 km)

One of the most unique features of the hike, these walkways are bolted into the canyon walls. Suspended above the rushing water, they allow hikers to walk safely through narrow sections of the canyon. These catwalks provide breathtaking views of the gorge, waterfalls, and eroded limestone formations. They are sturdy with metal railings, making them suitable for most visitors, including families.

2. Forested Trail Sections (Beyond Lower Falls)

After the Lower Falls (1.2 km one way), the trail transitions into a wider dirt and gravel path. These sections weave through a dense evergreen forest, offering occasional glimpses of the creek below. The trail here is still well-maintained and easy to follow, with some gradual elevation gain leading toward the Upper Falls.

3. Wooden Bridges and Overlooks

Several wooden bridges cross Johnston Creek, allowing hikers to get different viewpoints of the water. These bridges serve as rest points where hikers can stop and take in the scenery. Near the Upper Falls (2.5 km one way), a wooden viewing platform provides a higher vantage point over the waterfall.

4. Trail to the Ink Pots (Beyond Upper Falls – 5.7 km)

Past Upper Falls, the trail leaves the canyon behind and becomes a wider dirt path leading to the Ink Pots. This section has fewer constructed walkways and follows a natural forest route with occasional wooden bridges. The trail is steeper and more remote, but it eventually opens into a beautiful meadow with colorful mineral pools.

Best Walkway Highlights

Metal Catwalks (First 1.5 km): Best for dramatic views of the canyon and river. Wooden Bridges (Throughout): Ideal for stopping and taking photos.
Upper Falls Viewpoints: Great for seeing the waterfall from both lower and higher perspectives.
Ink Pots Trail: A more natural hiking experience with stunning open scenery. Johnston Canyon's mix of catwalks, trails, and bridges makes it one of the most scenic and accessible hikes in Banff National Park. Johnston Canyon Home
