Upper Falls Raw Natural Energy and Scenic Hike

Upper Falls Raw Natural Energy and Scenic Hike

The Upper Falls of Johnston Canyon are not only powerful but also uniquely sculpted by time and water. Located 2.5 kilometers from the trailhead, they mark the end of the main developed portion of the canyon trail. The falls themselves drop in two distinct sections—a narrow upper chute and a broader lower curtain—together plunging nearly 30 meters into the canyon below. The surrounding rock face is textured with layers of sedimentary stone, revealing the geologic story of the Rockies over millions of years.

Two main viewing areas give different perspectives: one catwalk leads to the base of the falls, where you can feel the thunder and spray as water crashes down, while the other is a higher viewpoint offering a sweeping look into the gorge. The trail leading to the Upper Falls winds through shaded forests of spruce and fir, across steel catwalks bolted into canyon walls, and past smaller waterfalls and pools that hint at what’s to come.

In winter, the Upper Falls transform into towering ice pillars, drawing ice climbers from around the world. Parks Canada often maintains a winter trail to the falls, though conditions can be icy and require spikes or cleats for safety. The Upper Falls are a testament to the canyon’s raw natural energy and a rewarding end to a scenic hike. Johnston Canyon Home
