Cave Openings in Johnston Canyon Walls

Johnston Canyon cave-like openings in the canyon walls are a spectacular feature.

Cave Openings in Johnston Canyon Walls

Cave Openings in Johnston Canyon Walls

At Johnston Canyon in Banff, one of the most intriguing features to spot from a distance is the cave-like openings in the canyon walls, carved over thousands of years by erosion from water and ice. These formations are a key highlight of the trail and add to the canyon's dramatic beauty.

Caves Along Johnston Canyon

Lower Falls Cave: Near the Lower Falls, there's a short side path that leads to a small cave. From this cave, you can get an up-close view of the waterfall and even feel the mist. From a distance, you can spot the opening in the rock, blending naturally with the canyon walls.

Cave Formations Along the Catwalk

As you walk along the elevated catwalks, look across the canyon to see natural cave openings on the opposite walls. These were formed by the continuous flow of water eroding the softer limestone rock over time.

Johnston Canyon Upper Falls Area

Above the Upper Falls, the rock faces show several cave-like indentations, some of which are perched higher up and inaccessible but still visible from the trail.

Observing Johnston Canyon's Caves

Best Viewing Spots: Look for the caves along the catwalks leading to the Lower Falls and in the canyon walls near the Upper Falls. They are particularly striking in winter, as ice formations add an extra layer of beauty to the scene.
Photography: Use a zoom lens to capture details of the caves and rock formations from a distance. Early morning or late afternoon light enhances the shadows and texture of the canyon walls.
Safety Note: Stay on marked paths and avoid venturing toward any caves that are off-trail, as the terrain can be unstable. Johnston Canyon Home
