Halfway Through the Johnston Canyon Hike

Halfway through the Johnston Canyon hike, you'll find yourself between the Lower Falls and the Upper Falls.

Halfway Through the Johnston Canyon Hike

Halfway Through the Johnston Canyon Hike

Halfway through the Johnston Canyon hike, you'll find yourself between the Lower Falls (1.2 km from the trailhead) and the Upper Falls (2.5 km from the trailhead). This section of the trail offers a transition from the busier, easier portion to the more adventurous and scenic upper half.

What to Expect Halfway Through the Johnston Canyon Hike

Quieter Trails: Many visitors stop at the Lower Falls, so continuing past this point brings fewer crowds. The trail narrows slightly and has a moderate incline but remains well-maintained.
More Elevated Catwalks & Forested Areas: The first half is dominated by metal catwalks bolted to the canyon walls, giving stunning views of the rushing water below. As you move beyond the Lower Falls, the catwalks lessen, and the path transitions into a more traditional forested dirt trail.

Scenic Stops & Smaller Falls

Along the way, you'll see more cascading water, deep pools, and unique rock formations. This is an ideal section for taking a break—benches and lookout points offer great places to rest and enjoy the views.

Gradual Elevation Gain

By the halfway point, you'll be experiencing a gentle but noticeable increase in elevation. The final approach to the Upper Falls gets steeper, but it's still manageable for most hikers.
Best Things About the Halfway Point:
- Fewer crowds, allowing for a more peaceful experience
- Beautiful mix of canyon views and forest trails
- Ideal place for a photo stop and short break
- A transition between the easier Lower Falls section and the more rewarding Upper Falls

If you've made it halfway, keep going! The Upper Falls (2.5 km one way) is worth the extra effort, offering one of the most stunning waterfall views in Banff. If you're up for more adventure, you can even continue past the Upper Falls to the Ink Pots (another 3 km). Johnston Canyon Home
