Hiking Johnston Canyon's Scenic Trails

Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park offers a scenic hiking trail that leads visitors through a series of waterfalls and unique geological formations. The trail is divided into several sections, each with its own distinct features.

Johnston Canyon's Scenic Hiking Trails

Lower Falls: A 1.2 km (0.75 miles) one-way hike on a well-maintained path, featuring catwalks and bridges that provide close-up views of the canyon and the Lower Falls.
Upper Falls: An additional 1.3 km (0.8 miles) from the Lower Falls, leading to the impressive Upper Falls.
Ink Pots: A further 3 km (1.9 miles) beyond the Upper Falls, reaching the Ink Pots, which are seven clear, greenish-blue pools in an open meadow.

Johnston Canyon Day-Use Trailhead

The trailhead is located at the Johnston Canyon day-use area along the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A), approximately 25 km (15.5 miles) from the town of Banff. Due to its popularity, the trail can become quite busy, especially during peak tourist seasons. To avoid crowds, it's advisable to start your hike early in the morning or later in the evening. Additionally, parking is limited, so consider using Roam Transit Route 9, which provides service to the trailhead.

In winter, the canyon transforms into a magical landscape of ice and snow. The trail can be icy, so traction devices for your shoes are essential to ensure safety. These can be rented or purchased at many retailers in Banff.

Remember to check current trail conditions and any potential closures before your visit, as sections of the trail may be closed to protect local wildlife or due to maintenance.
